shade loving plants
By Sunlight
United Kingdom
I have made a border against a run on conifers and wonder if anyone can tell me shrubs and perennials which thrive in dry, shady conditions. I planted 2 shrubs before and they are alive but not growing. If I transplant 2 large healthy plants from a sunny position will they survive? I need to plant about 12 foot of border. Thanks.

No plants will survive under the drips from another tree. Deep shade is also against balanced growth. Acuba holly may stand a chance, ground cover could be Vinca or Ivy, Bergenia, Hosta and Sedum for height. Hope this will help.

Part of our southern boundary is home to our neighbours Leylandii hedge.
Close to this we have pllanted a coupe of Smoke Bushes, one with red leaves and one with pale green. Both show up well against the hedge. Also against the hedge is a Verbaina which started flowering in October and is still in bloom. All of these help to break up the dark colour of the hedge. We also have hellebours against the hedge and these are flowering now.
In front of these we have a flowering cherry and then many shade loving plants including our Arisaema collection.
I will say that over the years we keep improving the ground with composted bark and also keep our side of the hedge cut hard back.
