The change in colour sounds okay and I would mulch and feed in the spring

My first thought is -has the weather been very dry down there? Make sure it's well watered, and check that there isn't any insect infestation.
Feeding anything at this time of year isn't a very good idea, because any new growth would be 'caught' and damaged by the first frosts.
