trying to identify this plant?

I thought it was a fern but after searching I still cannot identify, It is a rusty red colour kind of muted and I found it in the woodlands near Washago Ontario.

The stem is more watery.. and it dies back each winter

Thanks anyway, unfortuntately I cant find my pictures of it fully open so guess I will have to wait til this summer and post again.

I assume we are looking at the plants in the centre of the picture. Are the stems 'woody'? The leaves look like a Sorbus (rowan, mountain ash) which would fit the woodland location if there are similar trees/shrubs there.
