Salt

I work in a garden on the bank of a tidal river, does anyone have any ideas about what might grow in a herbaceous border where there is a high salt content, the ground is a mixture of clay and a light soil. The border is also in sun most of the day.

The shrub Tamarix apparently tolerates salt air ( often planted on coastal regions ). Now wheather it tolerates salt soil I don't know. I suspect it does. If you think about it.

Any type of Rugosa rose is usually quite salt resistant. A nice scented variety with magenta colour blooms is "Hansa". A white variety would be either "Alba" or "Blanc Double de Courbert".
Trees that are salt tolerant include Willow and Russian Olive. Shurbs include Forsythia, bayberry and juniper.
I've heard that Witch Hazel is salt tolerant too.
Armeria maritima also known as Sea Thrift is very good as its name suggests. Also Sea Holly or Eryngium are very good. Fescue grass is salt tolerant and Daylilies...some varieties more than others.
