Can young silver birches kill older established rose bushes if planted close by them?

I have a 5 year old silver birch I planted from seed right next to a rose bush long established. The birch is 8 feet tall as I have pruned it quite severely, it being in the small garden at the front of and near to the house. The rose bush appears to have died though it was robust with a heavy root stock. Could the birch have poisoned it? Paul.

The roots of the Silver Birch will have taken much of the nourishment from the rose. Also the rose would not like the drips from the silver birch.
