Yes, I would say so. But for the first weeks ( or until it gets freezing) I would water on rainy days, too. Hope your tree gets better.

Most Salix are deciduous so will have brown leaves then fall off, especially if in a windy site.

Sounds like a water problem - the weather is still very mild for the time of year, so leave the hose trickling at the base for an hour if you can, assuming its in the ground. Won't just be autumning if the stems are looking brown and dry as well. Once the weather gets properly cold, you won't need to water at all, but you will need to keep it watered during spring and autumn when the weather is dry. Salix like a lot of water, and any new tree needs a couple of gallons a week during summer and early autumn for the first 2 years of its life.

Hi thank you all for the advice
I was only doing a couple of buckets a week, will do one a day untill the weather turns now.We have not long moved and I am a newby to plants and gardening the tree was a gift,I fancy putting some hardy fushias in the garden and hanging baskets,is it to late this time of year to do.ALL advice appreciated.Thank you.

Hardy fuschias in the ground will be okay (if you can find any, most garden centres are filling up with Christmas tat instead) but not in baskets - if you want a basket for winter, use small conifer or small shrub cutting as an upright, surround with something like violas or pansies and one or two small trailing ivies.

Have you given it plenty of water? Young trees need lots to help them get established.
