Hi everyone, Can anyone tell me where i can get information on the rights of allotment tenants please.
I ask becouse our rents are set to go up by 100% this cominig March,
There are other issues also, but too lengthy to go into at the moment.
We have formed a comittee but changes keep taking place without consultation, any advice would be appretiated, Thank you, Funky,

If you google 'rights of allotment tenants' it throws up lots of sites where the legal information appears to be available. Worth a look?

Are these Council allotments FF ? As I seem to remember councils being directed to increase Allotment charges when the council funding cuts were announced last year. I believe they are to increase substantially in many parts of the country.

It could be worth checking on an Allotment Growers Site.

How much is 100% in monetary terms? 1p to 2p is a 100% increase but is also only 1p.

There are three types of allotment:
‘Statutory’ allotments - these cannot be sold or used for other purposes without the consent of the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government
Temporary allotments - these are not protected from disposal and can be sold
Privately owned land - this can also be let for use as allotments but is not protected from disposal by your local council.

Which ever you have your rights and responsibilities are set out in a tenancy agreement with the allotment provider.

You need to take your case up directly with the allotment provider. The National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Limited may be able to give advice?

Thank you for your anwers, following your leads i now realise there is very little i can do and must accept the increase from from £75 per year to £150 for my full plot,

£75 to £150 is not fair. Have they justified it at all, such as new lighting, free compost or new fence?

The new rent works out at £2.88 a week that seems incredibly cheap to me. I spend more than that a day on newspapers.

Again it seems a big jump but, for someone in my position who has no garden and has been stuck on a waiting list for ages £150 seems reasonable. Allotment rents have been the biggest bargain ever.

But I agree with Kildermorie, if your Allotments need a facility now is the time to ask for it.

Allotments usually make plenty of free compost

I read in the papers this week that councils will deliver leaf mould to allotments for free as they dont want to put it in land fill sites. Sounds great if it is correct?

Hi Kildermorie, they justify the increase by saying they are only keeping in line with other rents but are compairing our rural plots with urban settings, unfair becouse we are two and a half miles out in the country.
still i suppose i am lucky to have an allotment at all, so should'nt complain

hello pimpernel, i agree with your comments, i guess sometimese we just dont know when we are well off,
We do have the option of doing an hour a wk community work on the site for half rent.so will probably go down that avenue.

Oh well what a good Idea that is..The allotments I want to get into maintain a Community Orchard..Where all the fruit is free for any one that turns up.
