I am just about to pot two apple trees which are heeled in at the moment in the garden. I have emptied my compost bin and am using half of this and some John Innes soil. Is it necessary to add a little bone meal to aid rooting or is this "overcooking" the nutrients?

You are welcome. I hope you have nice big pots. They need to be the type which are either straight sided or flare at the top. If the soil in them freezes the soil needs room to expand without breaking your precious pots.

I use bonemeal with everything that i plant because it is a slow release fertiliser and won't do anything fast but it will help the roots to establish themselves.
