Is it Ok to put newspaper on the compost heap at my allotment. i have been doing up to now, but I heard that theres something dangerous about the ink they use for newspapers?

As far as I am aware,they don't use poisonous substances in their inks now..not sure if it was cyanide or arsenic ..but I may be wrong...I also add torn up newspaper to my compost bin..

Most organic gardening books will still recommend that you not use the pages with colored ink, though that is becoming a larger and larger part of the dailies!

with most things that humans touch or can put in there mouth these days it has to be basicly safe so the companies dont get suwed excuse my spelling . as said not to much and rip it up . if you want to go fishing lay a sheet on 2-3 nights before and they will congregate under the paper nicely .just a tip .

All paper is great for the compost ie.. kitchen roll, shredded paper too, it all adds up to a rich humus.

Agree Bilbo, they were better in newspaper - but it might have something to do with what they are fried in now as well. And they used to cut them thicker.

All my shredded private papers go in too,and it soon rots down,if its well mixed in..

Don't take this as the definitive answer, but I always put some torn newspaper in the compost - not too much at a time, kind of spread out. Never seems to be a problem.
