Apparently the birds will just peck them off as well. They told me that in the garden centre and they will always go for the yellow ones.

I think I once read that members of the finch family especially ( which of course includes sparrows which may be the most likely culprits) like young growth on yellow primroses and crocuses.

Hello.
I don't know if you have a cat, or visiting other cats in your garden? I've watched ours nibbling the heads of mini-daffs, which is frustrating, among other odd behaviour!
The drinking out of the birdbath thing he does though is surely just to terrorise our birdy friends.

Sparrows will eat the yellow heads off crocuses for the pigment in the yellow flowers. This helps their plumage and to attract mates!

Do you have rabbits in your garden? Last year I watched as a rabbit went round all my primroses and nipped off all the flower heads. Interestingly, he didn't seem interested in all of them - he favoured the pale yellow! The geraniums also went the same way - they didn't eat them, just lopped them off! Little Tinkers!
