can you cut back primose leaves without damaging the plant

My primrose leaves continue to grow taking up valuable space in the dormant period and providing wonderful shade for slugs and snails in my beds can I cut these back

I don't know if what I am doing it's right but I pull of all the big damaged leaves leaving only the new ones and my primulas and polyanthus and they still giving me some pretty flowers.
I think that July is a good time for dividing them, I tried with a few of them and they look happy.
