A few weeks ago I put a good mulch on top of some of my less hardy perrenials to help them through the bad weather. Since then, the weather has been unseasonly mild and I found today that many of them are now sprouting out of the top of their mounds! Should I add more mulch to cover the new growth?

I waited until the forecast was for colder temperatures and put my mulch on yesterday. It may pay in future to do the same rather than go by the calender

I hadn't thiought about crown rot, so thanks for that warning. In future, I will listen to the forecast as suggested. I try to do my best and it always seems to backfire. It is snowing here now, so what will be, will be.
Thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't. They may get tip pruned, but they will recover from that. Deeper mulch might result in the crowns rotting, and there is no recovery from that.
