As daffodils are poisonous, can I grow over-wintered spring onions mixed in with daffodils? And can I then grow runner beans in the places where daffodils have been? Thomas

the daffodil bulb is toxic and has been used in victorian times by women to 'dispatch their husbands. cooked like onions!!
Daffodils contain the alkaloids galanthamine and lycorine, for which there is no specific antidote.

the flowers however are edible like courgette flowers.
there is no problem with growing crops in the same place. very few plants make the soil toxic for other plants.

Thomas the answer is yes you can grown your overwintering spring onions and then your runner beans in the same soil. The daffodil bulb is only toxic when eaten.

I can relate to that Seaburngirl. I've been married 3 times. My first two wifes died from eating Daffodils. The third one died because she wouldn't eat her daffodils ;O)

Just make sure only you harvest the onions.
When I first read 'people mistake daffodils bulbs for onions' I scoffed. Since then I've heard loads of stories of people doing just that either out of ignorance or being in a rush.
In one case, a woman put a sack of onions next to a sack of bulbs - that's asking for trouble and it happened.
So, make sure you harvest the onions yourself.

I'd agree on that one TPG

Daffodil poisoning is well documented in Victorian court reports. easier to get and use than arsenic.
wonder how many women got away with murder back then.

Myron - give over it isn't funny!

But it's a very serious subject, and one that should be aired MG as it's important to know about. Poison can be spread in different ways and should never be underestimated where gardening is concerned.

I agree but why make jokes about killing off wives...

Myron was just having some harmless fun MG. He didn't mean to cause offence to anyone.
I am sure he is sorry if he did cause offence.

Daffodils do make you sick and give you diarrhea but only if eaten. As long as you do not eat them then they will not make you ill - so no problem in planting them with onions etc.
