I want to plant a small cotoneaster tree in my south facing London garden. Shall I buy one from a garden centre or take a cutting from tree in local garden?

A cutting will take 15 years to be of reasonable size - buy one if you want a tree. A cutting will take time to grow - 2-3 years before it will increase much in size as it will be putting its energy into making roots.

Cotoneaster x watereri 'Cornubia' is the one to buy but you will pay about £40 for a decent one. You are really buying time and the expertise of training a tree. If you don't want to spend that sort of money or wait for ages, when I would suggest that for about £10, buy a shrub of the variety which has a good structure and train it yourself.

Are you a patient person? Cuttings will take several years to reach a good size. Softwood cuttings should be taken in June, but you could try hardwood cuttings now.
