Why has my Echinocactus grusonii (mother in laws pillow) spikes at the bottom gone brown?

Not long ago bought a Echinocactus grusonii its medium sized and looks healthy apart from the spikes at the bottom of the plant are brown, why has this happened? if i remove the brown spikes will new white ones grow back? would aperciate some help, thanks alot for reading! :)
