Box trees have virtually no leaves on the top?

A year ago I bought two small buxus trees which looked great. However this year there was an abundance of berries on them and now there is virtually no leaves on the top of the trees - does anyone know if this is common with the buxus trees? Would appreciate any help thanks Andrea x
