what would you choose for a specimen evergreen shrub that will grow to 5feet or more with a bit of sideways spread as well? It's for a sandy soil south facing location, to be planted in the lawn not a border?

Hello! Cotoneaster frigidus cornubia, is a lovely multi-purpose small tree, with scented flowers, and red berries. Only deciduous in very harsh winter. Can be easily pruned to keep to size.

Magnolia Grandiflorus is a beautiful evergreen shrub/tree, I have one growing in a pot which I only planted last year and it is nearly up to 5ft already, it gets the most beautiful massive flowers on in August September.

Cotoneaster 'Cornubia' as a shrub or a small tree would be good. How about Cytisus battandieri, the Moroccan or Pineapple broom, silver-grey leaves with scented buttercup-yellow racemes, won't be seen in everybody's garden. If you fancy Magnolia grandiflora, then look for a dwarf variety otherwise it will end up being a beast.

How about a tree heather, Erica arborea? This has the usual heather type flowers but they have a beautiful scent and are very attractive to bees.
