can anyone tell why there are only 3 buds on my camelia
but it looks really green and healthy. What should I do to encourage it to flower more?

Agree ... camelias, rhododendrums, azalea etc need tlc in summer and autumn to produce flowers in early spring. They need to be kept watered year round which sounds like your main problem. They are also an ericaceous plant, so slightly less nitrogen and more mineral feeds with iron are needed. Either a specific ericaceous feed or top rose will help. On another thought ... is it potted, and maybe needs to be repotted to a slightly larger pot? If so, use a tree/shrub/rose or ericaceous compost.

Lack of flowers in spring is often due to a dry summer when the immature flower buds are produced. So make sure that your camelia is kept well watered and an occasional feed with a high-potash fertilizer (sulphate of potash) or Tomorite will help.
