Did you use fresh compost and a clean pot, Poppylinda? Or reuse old compost, specially some that had grown violas or pansies before?

Fresh compost yes, cant remember washing the pot out though, tulips and hyacynths growing well so far.

I was wondering about Pansy blight, which is much more likely in soil/compost where pansies have grown before, but it can just strike anyway. Might just have been an ordinary fungal problem though.

They seemed to rot off at base, could that be pansy blight?remembering back the leaves went whiteish at first.

Sounds more like a fungal thing causing rotting at the base of the stem rather than pansy blight - actually I'm calling it pansy blight, its proper name is pansy sickness. In that, the whole plant wilts, even though they're not dry, and usually dies.

I wasn't aware about Pansy sickness,and didn't know they
shouldn't be planted in soil used for them before.. mine are,and this is how they look this year too.......thank you..

Doesn't always cause a problem, using the same soil - it's just an increased risk, that's all.

No the tulips will not have been the problem, not kept well enough watered, over watered, cold...
