Confused about tulips
Devon, United Kingdom
A writer in a garden mag said that she just throws tulip bulbs away after they have flowered and buys new ones in autumn. Seems a bit expensive to me. However my tulips are very hit and miss. I've tried moving them to a new spot and a few come up but they are a bit weedy and the parrots are no longer parrots.
My species ones are fine (and very beautiful) in that they do come up again. Nice to have a few showy ones though.
What do you knowledgeable gardeners think? Are there some that are really only at their best for one season? i feel like I'm wasting my time re-planting them.

That's a new one on me. Never heard of anyone who throws them away after one year. I most certainly wouldn't.

I know a 'lady' who buys different tulips for colour themed schemes every year and she just throws last years away. seemed a waste and when i asked her if i could have them she said only if a paid for them. needless to say I didnt buy them.
my apledorn have been in for 15yrs plus and still doing well.

Mine too come up every year i wouldn't thrown any away!! You could try and feed them that might help the ones that haven't done so well?

Seaburngirl... she is obviously not a real gardener! If we don't want a plant, for whatever reason, we would much rather give away than throw out! In fact for the last few years Bulbaholic has had an honesty stall in one of our parking spaces during late spring early summer. He puts out plants we have grown an excess of with a name label and info and sells for 50p or £1 - he is so busy now he is retired it looks like it isn't going to happen this year ;-). Anyone who visits our garden goes away with plants and any garden we've ever visited we've come home with plants...

Thanks for the comments and advice. I will feed them this year and see if that works.
yes I agree; what a mean person that is Seaburngirl, who would rather chuck them than let someone else make good use of them.
I often offer spare plants on Freecycle and there are always lots of responses. Moongrower is right. Gardeners love plants too much to let them die. Much better to send them to a loving home and someone else then gets the benefit.

LOL! I planted some tulips 3 years ago. They came up and flowered once, but haven't since, but still, I will not dig them up and throw them away.

they will make good fertiliser if they dont grow

We only grow species tulips but would not consider throwing them out after a year... perhaps the writer is getting a cut from the bulb company? A big commercial bulb grower and seller is one o four friends - he has never suggested chucking out any bulbs once they have flowered.
Seems to me that garden magazine writers need to get out into the real world!
