Are any new leaves appearing or are all the old ones just dying off?

it does sound a bit grim

Holly leaves just go slightly yellow before falling off. I am afraid that the news may not be good.

Ali, we all think it is a deceased holly but before you pull it out you can lose nothing by trying to break off a few twigs. If the inside of the twig is brown then try a branch. If you can break it readily then I am afraid .....

I do hope you haven't got any honey fungus growing near your plants.... Could be one reason.......

hi im still learning about gardening whats honey fungus please.

16 Apr, 2009

You know if you've got it by looking under the bark of a dead or dying tree - there's a distinctive mushroom smell, and 'bootlace' lookiing strands just under the soil from the tree/shrub. Also, large fungi appear at the base. Unfortunately, it spreads to nearby shrubs and trees and kills them too.

We had transplanted three 24 foot hollie trees and all the leaves turned brown and it looked like all the trees were gone, "but nope", we waited one full year and two out of the three came back, "slowly" but back and greener then ever, so don't give up, and wait one full year and that should tell the tale.
