How do I prune a Bay Tree

I have been bought a bay tree - it has been indoors for the winter as I was told it wouldnt stand the frost. I have just put it outside. I have been told to keep it pruned to keep the "globe" shape and to stop it getting tall and thin - I love the idea of the ball of leaves but it will mean me chopping off the new bright green shoots (about 6" long) and leaving the old hard dark dry ones in situ. This doesnt seem right somehow - any suggestions? Than you

Youn should be able to prune back the new shoots leaving one or two of the new leaves , they will then sprout again quite quickly. Use secateurs to make sure you dont leave cut leaves
