Just wondering if a Clematis montana rubens would be ok grown in a large container.Ihave a rampant one on my decking which I have to be quite brutal with.I'd like the new one on my back fence behind which is a neighbours conifer hedge which obviously takes all the goodness from the soil.Any advice appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, the short answer is no - unless the container is the size of a water tank, its growth will be too restricted. This one wants to get at least 30 feet by 30 feet - choose a smaller clematis to keep in a tub, one of the hybrids maybe, such as The President.

Than you for advice. Should I plant in the ground considering the conifer hedge?

Unless the hedge is 50 feet high, so long as you plant at least 4 feet, and preferably 6, away from the base of the trunks, should be okay.

You will have to watch that it doesn't climb all over the conifer hedge though. they are very vigorous and only flower for a short time - have you thought about growing some smaller ones that would be OK in big containers?

I'm going to have a rethink! Many thanks.

It would have to be a very big container otherwise it would need a humungous amount of watering.
