Jasmine

After a good first season- my jasamine seems to have given up the ghost during the winter. I have it in a metal container with some trailing ivy which seems to have survived -Should jasmine be protected in the winter? OR was it possibly a lack of water?

I have 2 summer jasmine's. They both appeared dead, but after lots of watering (they are in pots) one of them seems to have new growth. Hang in there.......
