Don't plant in full sun or the markings on the leaves will be bleached out, if your soil is very heavy add a bit of grit.

I have two hostas one in soil which is a bit sandy and one in heavy clay soil which is also very wet in winter, and both of them are thriving, so i suppose they are happy wherever you put them. But remember to put slug pellets down as soon as they come through the soil in spring.

Ooooh, I don't use slug pellets, too much damage to birds and hedgehogs that eat the slugs. The wildlife die a slow and horrible death, :-(
I put ordinary compost in a pot, put sharp small stones round the edges to keep the slugs off, plopped the pot under a tree, and it's doing really well. Mind you, I do also water it well frequently, as hosta's love damp conditions.

Hostas like most soils and a bit of shade too. They are also brilliant for pots in a normal all purpose compost.
Careful of slugs with these plants, the slugs just love the new shoots, lol.
