I have a south facing garden on the south coast which is all paved with a east facing brick garage wall, a west facing fence with a border and a tall hedge facing north. I want to brighten it up with container plants especially some standards in pots on the east facing garage wall. Any ideas please?

Not for standards, particularly. You could use bay standards, but if you get cold winds in winter from the east, they won't appreciate that at all.
Large pots will accommodate large shrubs such as Fatsia, Fatshedera lizei variegata (will need support to keep upright), and Pieris japonica varieties (needs acid soil). Bamboo can work well in pots - some varieties are better suited than others though, so I'd choose Phyllostachys nigra, or Sasa varieties. Other ones to consider are Osmarea, Pittosporum, Viburnum, Phormium. This assumes you're not close enough to the sea to get salt spray...
