I have lost small ones, cut it right down to the ground. Leave till June, if you get no new growth, dig out the roots.

I have done the same, mine looked pretty sick and I have pruned it back to where there is still green stems and I hope that it will re-grow. If it has not produced any sign of growth by the end of September I will hook it out and replace it.

Scratch away a little bark on the main trunk just above soil level. If it shows green, there is still some life but if it's all brown or grey, I'm afraid it's an ex-bottlebrush

Hi, Have you tried the old scrape test? Go the the far end of a branch and scrape some of the bark off. If it is green/white then it should be ok. If it is brown then go further on down the branch doing the same thing until you find green/white. If still brown then I would bin it.

I'd say that was pretty much dead unfortunately.
