The Netherlands. Nicholas Crane said that their flat ground was under the sea years ago, and now it has been drained and dried out it contains nutrients that suit Tulips. Does anyone know what these nutrients are?

They need nitrogen, potassium and phosphate, but whether that is found in the sand I do not know. To me the main reasons for the success of Tulips (and other bulbs) in the Netherlands is the free draining, quick warming in Spring, nature of the sandy soil.
