they mite be eating it or perhaps lining there nests with it . just a thaught .

The little blighters have been doing it for years! I remember my Dad complaining over 60 years ago that the sparrows had got to his yellow crocuses again!

The ones I saw didn't seem to take any petals, just throw them on the floor lol. I've not noticed them doing this to these polys before and they're near the house. They seemed to have a look inside, then pluck a petal in disgust !:-) I'm so thrilled to have my sparrows back as, after the makeover, all my little birds deserted me leaving me only with wood pigeons so I don't really mind the occasional stripping:-))

They don't eat the petals or use them to line their nests Nosyp. it is simple bird vandalism and they only attack yellow flowers.

I've just discovered some petals in the bird bath! :-)

Not surprised :-)

Spring is a very romantic time:-)

there must be a reasen mg as unlike humans animals and birds never do anything for know reasen but i dont know what that reasen mite be . as said sparrows were getting rare so its worth it just to have them back .

Perhaps Mrs sparrow has just said "No" to Mr sparrow, and he's got to vent his anger on SOMETHING! ;o))))
I stopped planting yellow crocuses (croci?) and polyanthus years ago because they got ripped to shreds every year.

I'm not sure birds and animals do have a reason for everything they do NP, watching our siamese girls they simply do what they feel like doing.
28 Mar, 2012
Lol I just thought maybe Mr Sparrow, having had his advances spurned, was making a romantic gesture to Mrs Sparrow by way of a petal strewn bath:-))

I think we're getting into the realms of fantasy, now, Bornagain.........;o)))))

animals do everything for a reasen or they would be mad like us humans .your cats are using body language to a lesser or greater degree as they cant speak .
28 Mar, 2012
They can speak perfectly well NP I simply don't always understand what they are saying. I do not believe it is body language that causes our batty daughter cat to tear across the garden and half way up the ash tree simply her high spirits! Mother meanwhile looks at her in disgust.

My old cat Dunkel used to do that which caused my gang of dogs to give chase. Her ears would go flat and off she would go shooting up an old laburnum tree. Halfway up she would slowly start the slide down. Dogs waiting eagerly to pounce when she reached the ground. On landing, she would immediately start to clean herself, giving the dogs a withering look which made them feel silly and she would stalk off tail in the ear. The dogs all looking perplexed would wander off muttering:-)

well she is training to be an adult with a little bit of play mg . they do nothing for nothing . i joked about humans but everything is done for a reasen . if your cats can talk as aposed to comunicate then you should show someone youl be rich lol .they have to use body language because they cant talk and like us but much more honed they have a great sixth sense . people have a habit of giving there pets human atributes . bye know means do different birds from the same species attack specificly yellow flowers for know reasen its just not feasable . you hit the nail on the head saying you didnt know what they were saying thow its realy comunicating as they cant talk .my 2 pups the same age and brothers are seamingly just playing but underneath this they are testing each other to see how they fit in the pack . some of there body language is amazingly subtle .my 14 year old springer is second in command next to me . he rules the other 5 dogs with just a look that we just mite not notice . ive studied animals all my life on tv and the dogs we have always had .

NP she is 8 years old not a baby... and she is the boss cat

Our cats have absolutely no difficulty letting us and each other know what they are thinking and what they want us to do for them, but most of all, when we are in the doghouse, we are left in no doubt at all, and all (except little Brumas, who makes very human "talking noises") (actually, he sounds more like a Teletubbie) without speech.
30 Mar, 2012
I agree Gattina cats can make their wants known very clearly... but I've always maintained they were far more intelligent than dogs! Dogs have 'masters' cats have 'servants' :-)
30 Mar, 2012
Oh now you've gone too far Moon Grower!!! I have never met a dog yet who regularly climbs a tree from which it can't get down. If only imperiousness and selfishness was a marker for intelligence then cats would win hands down, but it is the dog which learns tasks to make the lives of those among us with disabilities that bit more bearable and the dog which offers unconditional love which some wrongly mistake for servility. I win I win I win;-) I do love cats though as I love all animals:-)))
30 Mar, 2012
But that is the point... you can never get a cat to do or learn anything it chooses not to whilst a dog an be trained. Can you imagine a seeing eye cat? Oh and any tree a cat can climb it can get down from even if it tries to tell you otherwise :-)

drifting away from the subject eg sparrows dont just coinsidently pull yellow petals off of flowers in different places there for its done for a reqasen that knowone but them knows .everything in nature has a reasen and everything they do or dont do has a reasen . cats are more visual predetors hence the eyes pointing forward like us . dogs use more there nose then ears and lastly there eyes which arnt much better than ours hence there eyes being on true dogs like wolves on more the side of there head and horses and rabbits eyes are definativley on the sides as they are or have been prey animals so they can see as much as possible around them . i watched an experiment with a crow and a chimpanzee . there was a mock up room in miniture identicle apart from size to a full size room . they showed the crow and the chimp seperatly in the small room wear they put something nice for them to eat . the crow found the treat in the big room instantly wear the chimp took a little while . does that make a crow more inteligent than a chimp which i mite add is just one fourth of a % geneticly different to human beings .ofcourse sometimes you can tell what there thinking and yes they can use us to get what they want . that just shows inteligance which dogs, cats, crocodiles, ants, humans and goldfish have in differant ways of varying degrees depending on what there nieche in life is . it doesnt change the fact that animals dont do anything for know reasen .

This discussion could go on for weeks. I'm with you on this one, MG. Very independent but imperious creatures, cats. I think we have the pick of the daft ones, though. I LOVE the way that if a cat does something by accident that is undignified (like sliding on a rug, or running into the furniture) they can instantly make it look as though this was what they'd intended to do all along, and make you feel small that you'd been amused by it.
30 Mar, 2012
well cats bye nature live on there own apart from lions and dogs bye nature are pack animals which makes them quit different bye nature . my dogs rub thereselves on the rugs because it causes friction and they like it . my pug walks into things but he only has one eye . cats walk into things that makes dogs more inteligent lol as with both eyes dogs dont lol . so do you think animals do things for know reasen gattina or know apparent reasen . id agree with the second .

Depends how mad they are, Nosey!
I'm so glad you changed your avatar, BTW. This one's much prettier.
