Hello Anne ... Sounds like scale insect and/or woolly aphids? Check the stems and under the leaves for any brownish small 'bumps'. You can wipe them off by hand, and wash the 'soot' (scale/aphid poo, loved by ants for its sweetness) off the leaves, by hose, or use a spray once bugs and bees have gone to bed, followed by a wash the following week.
