I have recently moved house and have a garden for the first time. I am therefore a novice. I have an area of around 20m2 which has a rather heavy layer of bark chips on top of a membrane. They look like they have been there for a number of years. The question is, after lifting the chips and removing the membrane, can I dig the chips into the earth or will this make the soil poor?

Welcome to goy I feel sure that you could compost the chips down. I would get some fertiliser for the soil I have used wilkos chicken manure as quick fix in the past. What do you want to grow in your new garden?
