I'd like to buy a magnolia stellata to keep in a pot; my garden is quite windy. If I buy a short wide plant will it be ok?

It will need a very big pot if you have it for long. It will be a lot happier in the ground.

Won't make any difference - the shape its adopted when you buy it will soon change as it starts to grow, so if you're hesitant about its surviving frequent strong winds, best not buy it in the first place, or put it somewhere its not so windy.
