Last year I saw quite a few of those butterflies (or probably a moth actually) in my garden, in south London. I have looked everywhere but I can't find their names. Can anyone help with identification?

Oh, I didn't realise they were only seen in London for the last two years. I am also in South London and saw one last year and the year before. I assumed they'd been around for longer than that. They're very striking, aren't they?

I reckon its a Tiger moth, most likely the Jersey Tiger Moth. Easier to identify if you can see the second pair of wings beneath, but I can't think of another that fits the bill. Only sighted in London for the first time in 2010, prior to that in Dorset and parts of the south coast. Previously only known in Jersey itself. Can be seen during the day time, when its also active.
