Can anyone recommend a climbing annual that would suit a north facing shady fence? I want to grow morning glory but don't think it would suit this position? Thanks

I've had a couple of passion flowers growing on a north facing wall for a couple of years. They seem to do okay, not overly abundant with flowers, but when they do flower they are beautiful - check my pictures for one of them.

Thanks all, I was really after an annual rather than something more permanent, which I believe they all are? I still have my L plates on!

Morning glory is an annual as well as 'black eyed susie' or sweet peas, have a look at the seed packets they usually give the growing conditions

I don't think morning glory flowers would open in shade though. Wondering if nasturtiums might be the best bet, but they would need some sort of support. Happiest in sun obviously but it might be wortha try.

Sweetpeas sound good--I'm trying them in a shady spot this year. I would also try climbing nasturtiums as suggested above as the leaves are very attractive even if there are fewer flowers in the shade. You can get them with variegated leaves as well, which would add interest.

Ah thank you everyone, think I might try the sweet peas. I've lived in this house for 16 years and in all those years my garden consisted of just trees and grass, well I've had the trees removed and new fences put up, so I've dug a border all around and and slowly but surely getting it planted up. I'm getting hooked on this site I might even post a few pics lol.

Good luck with that then Suzy. If the fence is long enough why not try both?
Love the flashy new avatar NP - who can that handsome bloke be?
