Watering the garden with waste water
By Scubasteve

Someone just mentioned about watering the garden with soiled water as in bath water, washing up water, washing machine etc. When I think how much water I could save its a bit eye opening but is all this soiled water going to do more harm than good?

Apart from re cycling water, the latest government white paper "Recycling...The way Ahead for the nation" actually advises that instead of weeing in the toilet, people should collect there wee in containers, dilute it down 1 part wee to 10 parts water, and use that as a fertiliser for your garden.
As they correctly point out, normal wee contains nitrogen potassium and phosphorous and is the most natural fertiliser available.

I forgot to mention that female urine is particularly beneficial as estriols produced by women is a well known growth enhancer, especially good for onions and leeks.
As you know, the Welsh are renowned for their leeks, and the well known expression "going for a leek" originated many years ago when flush toilets weren't available, or toilets were outside the house, so when Welsh ladies answered the call of nature they used the above expression to "leave the room" discretely.

I'm sorry to say that I won't be saving my waste water. When the water industry was a public resource then I would agree that it was my duty to save the valuable resource. When Mrs. Thatcher decided to privatise the water industry her ministers advised her not to, as there was no competition but she relied on public greed and went ahead. My water is owned by a Australian banking consortium and I'm sure that their shareholders will be delighted that people are conserving their product. Your waste water will still go into the system and be recycled by the company to whom you pay your water bill.

Well done Jimmy, I don`t give a flying fig who owns what, I hope too many don`t think your way because two wrongs NEVER have made a right. What I do care about is keeping my plants alive , I enjoy my garden, I also like being able to get clean drinking water out of my taps in the house, I used to think it was a novelty as a child to fetch water from a pump for my Nanna before she had water laid on in her house, as stated I was a child... I HAVE NO WISH TO HAVE TO FETCH WATER FROM A STANDPIPE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO CUT IT OFF,I WILL CONTINUE TO DO MY BIT...
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, we all are..

Jimmy we still have to do our bit though, we are an island after all and wouldnt it be awful if like Lincs. says, that we all have to go to a standpipe like we did in 76. We are not conserving their product really just making it go a little bit further. Our local pond that is usually full of ducks, geese and swans is completely dry and the earth cracked. So sad.

The water companies lose the equivalent of one bath of water per person in this country every day due to leaks. Cumulatively, about a Billion Litres.
Yes, we all have our bit to do, especially the people we pay our water rates to. It's not as if they don't make several hundred million pounds profit a year. That's a point though, all that profit must mean we are being overcharged, and are expected to use less?
Stuff that for a lark, like Jimmy, i'll be using my 200 litres a day in summer regardless.

How is emptying my bathwater into my bin instead of down the drain saving the water company any amount of pounds, duh, think about it, oh I know, I`m not, I`m benefitting my garden, thats the whole point.....I already said, its recycling.
Simple isn`t it, I don`t give a stuff about the whys and wherefores and whose at blame, what I do know is that we aren`t getting the rain we need so must help ourselves when we can, its not rocket science,
As to the Lark Scrumpygrat and the other birds then they can share my drinking water....

If you really cared about saving water you wouldn't have a bath.
140 litres is used each time. Just use a flannel and hot water like i do. It is not rocket science.
Or are you going to run a bath so that you can fill your water butt. In which case, don't pollute it with soaps and things, just run a cold bath and leave the plug out.

I don`t actually but have a member of the family who is unfortunate enough to need a hot bath to keep the joints moving, not nice, very painful, no cure and I wouldn`t wish it on my worst enemy...

I am using mine, always do when neccessary, I always leave it to stand for at least a week before using it so the chemicals die down, diluted with rinsing water, never in my greenhouse though and definitely not on anything I`m eating, it has never hurt my flowers yet, and thats better than losing them, our ban comes into force next week and I need my rainwater for the greenhouse ...
