Lovage I think for certain. its a herb used in fish recepies .

He's sent me a pic of the tubers too .. I must admit I'm flummoxed! Never seen anything like it before. They resemble mini-hand grenades. I Can certainly see the resemblance of the leaves to lovage but the tubers also resemble jerusalem artichoke. Looks to me like they're not weeds but have been planted on purpose.

The leaves look celery like - pull one and smell - but are you sure the tubers are from the same plant?

lovage has nobbly tubers. they will have a celery is smell too.

Just had word back from the plot and yes, this DOES have a celery smell. Checked out 'lovage' on Google images and it is clearly the prime suspect, so I think we've identified it :o). Thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers and see you all later, Steve.
