wild black canes
By Bramble
If you are interested in maintaining and promoting a wild blackberry patch, what are the recommedations for helping the canes grow and to produce a good crop?Should they be pruned like cultivated one? Should other wild growth such as the beginnings of alders be removed?.Do you cut out a few high canes every spring? Most articles on the web describe how to get rid of blackberries rather than how to encourage.Advice please

Every year we attack ours with a hedgetrimmer just to keep it from getting too wild and overgrown and still get lots of lovely berries.

You would probably have to treat them like a cultivated patch. Cut off all the old growth after fruiting and keep them as weed free as possible. Trees would soon shade out the brambles altogether, so they definitely need removing.
