I need something for a shady spot yellow or white to brighten it up, only up to 4ft max any ideas please?

Have a look at some of the Viburnum varieties, several of which are evergreen and will give you white flowers now and berries later. Or there is Osmanthus Delavayi with white flowers now. For winter flowers there is Mahonia, with yellow flowers.
I'm sure you will get other suggestions from members.

Choisya ternata 'sundance'
Bright yellow foliage, white flowers. Evergreen and brightens up the dullest corner.
