I have a garrya elliptica growing on a northfacing wall. It has never flowered in the nine years we have lived here and I would like to know if there is anything I can do to remedy this. It looks healthy and grows quickly but I cannot remember seeing any tassles!

It also prefers full sun to semi-shade so this might be part of the problem.

If you prune it at the wrong time of year, there won't be tassels... I hope your garrya gets tassels next year. They should start growing towards the end of this year, and then get longer as the new year begins.

My garrya is growing on a shady east-facing wall and flowers most years so i'm not sure that aspect is the problem. As TT says, if you are pruning it at the wrong time, you will cut off all the wood that is going to flower. It should be pruned in very early spring so it has all season to produce new growth and you should see the new tassels forming in autumn.

Thank you for all your suggestions, should I prune now?
I will also feed as suggested in July. Can you recommend a good potash feed?

I pruned mine about two weeks ago so now is a good time to do it

Agree with Andrew above re pruning - as for the potash, just buy a box of sulphate of potash, as I mentioned above.

Previous question
If there are any, they appear in January/February, so if you can't see the wall without going outside, you might have missed them! Try giving it a high potash feed around July - sprinkle sulphate of potash at the base and turn it in.
