please help identify this plant

i have had this in my garden now for a couple of years. it dies down then comes back to life in the spring.
i have been told its an acer??
i wouls like to know so that i have it planted correctly and know how it should be kept.

If it dies away completely in the winter then it isn't an Acer. Does it flower at all? Sort of looks like an Astilbe to me, but only 'sort of'.

yes it died away to just brown, last year a long stem from the middle had small flower of a similar pinky colour but only one stem grew like that, sorry for all the vagueness i am only now getting into my garden and trying really hard.

Hi Laura, was there just one flower or a spike of flowers? I still think might be Astilbe

hi again, yes it had one flower like a pyramid shape.
i had a look for what you said, astilbe and i think your right.
i think going by the colour of the leaves etc its the 'key west' variety??
