Ivy is starting to grow into the inside wall of my house. How do I kill it before it destroys my whole back wall?

I think it sounds really serious, this state of affairs, and with all respect, Nosey, I think Nanageorge needs to get the systemic weedkiller out sharpish! The roots will keep sending out more growth if you just cut them down. We have an ancient ivy by our back gate, and we cut it back to the ground last year. Already it has new growth all over it. Ivy is lovely, but can be extremely damaging structurally.

I agree with Gattina. You also need to get the wall repaired. Ivy should never be grown where the wall is anything less than 100% crack proof or the ivy will root in to it. Another plant needing a health warning in my opinion. Take away the soil from the roots of the plant and cut it away as far down as you can then treat it immediately (while the cut is still fresh) with a root killer such as is used to get rid of tree roots. You may need to consult a garden centre to find the most suitable one available in USA. Keep an eye on the spot and immediately cut off and treat any regrowth. We have been trying for years to get rid of an established ivy outside my daughters garden wall which was breaking the wall up when she moved in. It is a real nuisance but your house is in serious danger. Maybe your buildings insurance company would help.

If it is growing indoors that sound serious, I think you should get a survey of the damage to your house in case you need to make an insurance claim.

Find where its coming from - cut down every bit of topgrowth, inside and out, then excavate the soil a bit to find the roots - do not cut the roots, particularly if they are woody - drill into them or make cuts in them but not right through, and treat with a brushwood killer or stump killer (in the UK, that would be SBK or Round Up Tree stump killer). You need to kill the plant at the root to prevent this recurring. Be vigilant for the next 2 years - you may find it still grows off smaller roots you've missed.

When you have cut it off at the base you will find it easier to remove the top growth if you leave it to die off first.

True. Also the thicker pieces when dried off make wonderful fire lighters!

cut it right down as much as possible or all if you can . if it then grows again you can keep it in check .
