I always use a Bone meal or blood fish and bone its slow to releases its food I never use a high nitrogen feed as it makes the leaves to soft for the winter and then you end up with scorched leaves

I always try to feed my plants well rotted horse manure, apply as a thick mulch after its rained.

Both of the above if you can , bonemeal 1st mulch 2nd
