What's the best kind of compost to plant peonies in ?

I would do 3/4 John Innes No3 and 1/4 multi purpose compost (give a good mix up) and add xtra grit keeps the soil slightly more open , I find with perenials it just stays too wet , fine for a shrub etc

Are you going to grow them in pots, or in the ground? if in pots you,re going to need very large pots very soon, they would be much better off in the ground in fertile well drained soil, in full sun - partial shade, Derekm.

Since they like a rich growing medium ,I would suggest a soil based John Innes No 3.
