have I put my chilli plants out too early?
I had a few inch high chilli plants and didn't have anywhere sunny to put them, so I moved the outside. With their continual growth be hampered by a bad start? Should I wait a bit and start some more seeds later in the year?
It's useful knowing that there a others for the UK here, who know what the whether has been like!
Advice welcome.

There's overnight frost warnings out for Saturday and Sunday night here in outer London, so do something with them before then.

Iagree Sarra, the toms, peppers etc. need the heat to ripen and sweeten them, and the chillis to encourage the heat in them.....I read about the frosts Bamboo....what a year!

I agree with the others and another thing is; the reason for the lack of growth is probably lack of light.
April in plant terms has been lacking sunshine or even bright weather and this has hindered growth.
The way my stuff is at the moment I would say that if we don't get some brighter weather soon my stuff won't be ready for planting out until mid June i.e. a month late :o((

Lack of sun, that's for sure - I'm still taking my winter dose of Vitamin D for heaven's sake...

I wish I had a green house to put them in. They were sitting on a sideboard in the living room, but I though they might get more light out doors.
Perhaps I try and bring them back in for a while.
Thanks for the advice.

Wold you have room for a cold frame that you could cover at night

Cold you bring them in at night and put them out again in the morning? Wouldn't matter much where you put them eg on the kitchen floor!

I don't usually put my chilli plants out until the beginning of June, and I would guess we are a tad further south than you are. Even if they don't get frosted, they just won't grow.

I've brought them back into the house now. Sounds like the best option.
It's worth noting that pound land are doing poly tunnels, 1.5m x 0.45 x 0.45. They're Not bad, for a pound.

Like Bamboo both me and my plants are suffering from SAD syndrome.
I would say my hardy stuff is about two to three weeks behind and my half hardy stuff must be at least a month behind.
My only consolation is;my pictorial calendar is working :o))
But it is not throwing up the results I want :o((
I am having to wear my fleece in the garden and most of my plants are covered with 'fleece'!
I think this year ranks as one of the worst gardening seasons I have ever had what with " not fit for purpose" compost and the unseasonal weather.
But as I always say;
It might be better next year ;o))

I think that is the gardeners motto!

2c here at the moment but at least its bright......started well yesterday until we had the hasilstones......

OMG, Pam! That's awful! We had an incredibly destructive hailstorm around this time last year that shredded and battered everything in the garden, washed away tons of topsoil and dented the car. As a passer-by commented while I was lamenting the lost orchard fruit, "Gardening is a job for dedicated optimists." Too right.

I have a sideboard in my conservatory/play-room, which is fast becoming a gardening shelf! So far my wife hasn't grumbled, the kids haven't toppled them and the cats haven't destroyed them. With any luck, I can keep my chilli plants there.
The plants are looking pretty feeble though. I have seeds left, would it be a good idea to start again?

Your last comment has made me smile, Madcow - I am afraid I assumed from your avatar name that you WERE the wife! If you think you've got enough light in your conservatory/playroom, I'd sow the rest of your seed about now - you've nothing to lose, and by the time they've got big enough to plant out, you'll probably have a heatwave in the UK!
P.S. Don't think only the UK has been getting this awful weather I've just been planting seedlings out wearing a mac and wellies, and we're just about to light the stove!

You don't actually indicate where you are in the UK Madcow, and believe me that makes a great difference, but I suspect that wherever you are that it is way too early. I usually leave mine in the greenhouse all summer here on the sunny Yorkshire coast but last year, because I grew too many indoor tomatoes and not enough Marmandes I moved them out (the chillies) in mid-June. It was fairly successful but certainly my crop was much lower than usual.
