I find a weedkiller painted onto weeds with a paint brush is much cheaper and just as effective.
You can use a selective weedlikker if you're using it on weeds in a lawn ( eg Verdone Extra) or a non selective weed killer (such as Roundup) if you want to kill weeds including grass in the wrong place

ill bear in mind what you say anchorman but i would love to know how it works or doesnt if you know what i mean . i have an ivy problem and im dissabled and scared of hights . i have a lovley ivy growing up the front of my house which i liked just there wear it stayed for quit a while . its nopw however gone over the guttering and is going up the tiles which could make my roof leek . i did the obvious and cut all the base roots right threw and all of them even the nieghbers with there permission . thow it slowed it down it definatly didnt kill it . trouble is i have loads of plants i love in my front garden right up to the ivy . i also have a chinese virginia creeper or dwarf virginia creeper mixed in with it that i also want to keep alive . its a lot redder than the normal virginia creeper and know wear near so vigoures . its the only one ive seen so i dont want to lose it .i wont pull the ivy down as i cant and theres loads of birds nesting in it but i do want it to die and rot back in its own time . i also need it to go brown as ivy is all self planting round here so i need to see the new shoots at the bottom so i can keep on top of them easily .

The trick with ivy is to cut a good length out of the stem of it at the desired height. It's no good snipping it as it will join back together. If you remove a good few inches of the stem, that ought to do the trick. It will take a while to die back.

If you want to kill the ivy roots, but not surrounding plants, Noseypotter, buy yourself a bottle of SBK brushwood killer. Expose as many of the roots as you can, you want nice chunky woody ones really. Make cuts or holes into the woody roots at the base, and apply the SBK to the holes/cuts, being careful that it doesn't run off everywhere else. Use it neat, then cover the area with plastic or upturned flower pots or whatever.
I've even treated thin, deep roots of ivy in this way - I cut them flat at the top end, then make a cross cut into the top (not easy, but possible) and apply SBK, pop a flowerpot over the top and push the soil back round.Works a treat.

If the ivy left on the wall is not attached to the mother plant, nor any part still growing in the soil, its dead or dying already. It remains green for a considerable period of time after being severed, but will eventually shrivel and brown. If its still green by the end of summer, its still attached somewhere, and still getting nutrients from the roots, especially if you can see new growth at the tips. Even if its dead, it will remain attached to the wall with a vice like grip, and you may find it pulls out mortar or the surface of the wall if you try to detach it.

brilliant i did cut it last summer every last bit of it and thow its not growing more its not obviously dying but im happy if it is going to die . i trust your judgement being a true plantspersen . thanx x .

If you mean the Roundup gel in a stick, have a look in Wilkinson's - they had it for around £8 two weeks ago. Haven't tried it yet, need to get some because I can't find an alternative stick or bar applicator type.
