Hi I bought a Clematis alpine 'Columbine' planning to put alongside a small rambling rose, but find the spot where I started digging- which has a manhole near by- has a hidden surround of buried bricks! (Should have guessed I suppose). Question is this- I REALLY wanted it in that location, would that particular clematis survive happily in a large container? and if so any particular things I should know, pot size, type, soil. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks.

Thanks very much for that. Been thinking about what you said and think I will have to plant clematis elsewhere and just leave rambler there. Pity, perhaps can scatter a few annuals there until rambler takes off. Thanks again.

Ultimate height and spread of this one is up to 2.5m with a spread of 1-2 metres, but you may not achieve that if its pot grown. You'll need a large pot, 2 feet deep, 12 inches wide. Use John Innes No 2 or 3, or a mix of that and multi purpose.
