I wonder if any Heuchera fans out there can solve this for me? When I bought them the one in the first photo was labelled 'Mahogany' and in the second photo 'Melting Fire.' Since they've grown new leaves I would say the labels were in the wrong pots as the first one looks much more like a melting fire and the second looks more of a mahogany colour?

Well, I'm no heuchera expert (although I'd love to be, and I'm working on it) but number two does look remarkably like "Mahogany". I don't know "Melting Fire", but the colour of picture number one is pretty fiery!
The colour reproduction in photos can be a bit misleading, and the light makes SUCH a difference - I can scarcely tell "Chocolate Ruffles" and "Plum Pudding" apart. (Haven't they all got such lovely names? Some poetic soul was at work there, I think)

I 'd say the top one was melting fire, I have that one. so perhaps the labels were wrongly placed. when i do plant sales i used to put the same varieties of plants together but after misplaced labels caused grief i now have them in separate places on the table.

Just Google plantagogo, where the national collection owners have their alphabetically listed sales catalogue. I would plump for no 2 being Melting Fire, as it is dark with ruffled leaves and no 1 Mahogany. Have a look yourself and see what you think.

Pergaps that's why I like them, Gattina - most of them sound like food!
Thanks Dorjac, I had a look at the site and the labels were correct - the one I think looks like a 'melting fire' is, in fact, Mahogany; and the darker one that I think is more mahogany-like is 'Melting Fire.' OK - that's put me right! Now all I need is Chocolate Ruffles, Lime Marmalade and Plum Pudding and I'll be right at home! ;o)

Maybe not such a poetic soul, then, Nariz - just a hungry one!

Nariz - Tip of the Day, lol - if you DO find Lime Marmalade, it prefers to be in shade. I met the plantagogo lady (member of GoY), Vicki, at Malvern, and told her I'd lost my "lime coloured" Heuchera . . . she asked "was it in the sun?" and it was, so that apparently was why it disappeared.

I thought ALL heucheras preferred slight shade to full sun?

Maybe Gattina - I dunno - but I have several different purples looking very happy in sunny beds!

According to the plant labels - 'Silver Scrolls' label says it likes sun; 'Mahogany' apparently likes dappled shade; and 'Melting Fire' likes shade, so that's what I've given them. They're new to me, so I don't want to lose them before I can enjoy them. Gattina: not so much 'hungry' as a lover of food - reading about it, thinking about it, planning it, shopping for it, preparing it, cooking it and eating it. Yum! One of my fave films is 'Julie & Julia' about the life of the great cook Julia Childs. I have a small version of her cookery book and have taken most of a day to make her Boeuf Bourguinon which was sheer Heaven - not down to any talent of mine - just pure Julia.

I was given an early edition of Mrs Beeton - I lost interest and patience after the first 5 pages. Not so much a domestic goddess, more a privileged bossy-boots.

I think Julia was pretty much along the lines of Mrs Beeton and her recipes can be long-winded and complicated, but I never was one for taking the easy route - the 'road less travelled' is for me!

16 May, 2012

I used to travel that road, Nariz, and still occasionally do, and a lot of the time it is worth it, but I'm getting lazy and go for short cuts far more often these days. Summer's not the time to spend hours in a hot, dark kitchen, and I'm putting far too much weight on as it is! Every now and then, though, when friends are about to descend, I spend days planning and preparing, and am very happy to do so, and (not wishing to blow any kind of trumpet, of course) the results are usually very satisfying, but they last so short a time, and then there's the washing-up to do.

Washing up? Dishwasher - sorted! Cooking in Summer? Wait for a rainy day - sorted! Weight? Cut back on the old vino - sorted! Road less travelled? It's still out there winding along .........

I have just checked mine and the second is the melting fire, not as I first said. oops!

Some things don't go in the dishwasher. What rainy days? Hardly drink wine at all, Nariz. You're going to have to do better than that! LOL!

Even though I now have their names certified as correct, Seaburngirl, I still think photo one looks more like a melting fire and photo two is more of a mahogany colour than photo one. Gattina : Lol!
