Fence climber advice please.I need a couple of fence panels covered and have always loved Hydrangea Petrolaris but have now come across Pileostegia Viburnoides which seems a little less vigorous and does have the added bonus of being evergreen and scented .Both I know are large plants that self sucker and would be better on a wall but I just love everything about the climbing hydrangea so thought it worth a try .Which would our lovely people here recommend ?

Oh thank you so much ,I love them, but all you ever see is them growing up walls .I've googled to death to see if i could see one on a fence .Did it self cling reasonable well Ojibway or did you train it and may i ask if its hard to keep in boundary ?

I didn't have to train either of them, Susie. They just grew up on the fence/shed by themselves. The only thing I do is to prune away branches that grow outwards and trim the tops to keep them to the required height when necessary. Oh, and I trim the shed one at the window, because it grows over that, too!

Just before you rush off to the Garden Centre, check out schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight' - it is related to both the other plants and has the added bonus of blue-green leaves

I agree, it is a very good plant. I can't grow it here (have lost two) but I wish I could!

Ohhh they do that in pink too Andrew ! but this is for a fence that I'm not sure gets a fair bit of east wind and it also has a group of cornus siberica variagata directly in front if it .Unsure on how the grey blue leaves would look together with that .I'll ponder though because it is stunning :-)

I have two H.Petiolaris, one climbing a 6ft wooden fence and the other covering the side of a wooden shed, both north facing sites. They do very well where they are.
I don't know about the other climber you mention, however, but someone else will, I'm sure.
