Answering the question, the worst that can happen is that you won't get as many flowers next year.

If you chop the leaves back regularly then the bulbs will gradually lose flower power until they just produce a few stragely leaves before dying.
Rather than cut them back try plaiting the leaves or tying them together with twine to keep them tidy.

The leaves help the bulb to restore itself so that you'll have good blooms next year. So I would leave them as long as you can. Once they start going yellow or falling over (natural die back), then you can mow over them or cut them down. The advice to Sjw on storing bulbs is good. We don't lift our daff bulbs, but you can if you want to dig in that area.
