Brodie Daffodils and Rhododendrons

We went back to the castle gardens today with the camera to look at the daffodils and the rhododendrons.
In the early 1900s the then Brodie used to raise daffodil cultivars in this field. Moongrower and I remember the field from many years ago when it was full of plots such as this and all the daffodils were named. Since the National Trust for Scotland took over the castle much of the information and stock has been lost. Never the less, the daffodils are very impressive.
The Walled Shrubbery Garden is equally impressive with daffodils and rhododendrons being the main focus. Whilst Mg tried to name my pictures I have no confidence in the original data and so have not attached names to the rhododendrons.

The daffodils are impressive, Bulbaholic, but I think the backdrop of the trees is as well.Lovely, huge mature looking trees!

I don't think that the Trust has anyone with the expertise to recover the old Brodie collection. The general concern is that due to the recession (and mismanagement?) that a lot of NTS properties and gardens are going to be closed or neglected.
The garden is a few hundred years old and is mature.

Now, a treat for you all. Last night one of the BBC gardening programs included a clip of the daffodils at Brodie Castle with gardener David Wheeler. To replay this go to the BBC news site and, at the top of the page, type 'Beechgrove Garden' in the search box. The relevant section starts at about 18 minutes and then you should watch through to the end of the program because David also addresses the much repeated quetsion on when to cut the leaves back. Enjoy.

Poor Moon grower! You could have let her have a try, Bulbaholic!
Looks like a lovely place to visit. I'm surprised that the Trust hasn't replaced the stock, though.
